a girl and her dog

The Self-Interview

Before you get started, stage a little self-interview for yourself. Having puppies is a lot of fun, but there’s a lot to think about. Are you ready?

  • Do I love puppies?
  • Do I love my dog and love her temperament?
  • Would a puppy who grew up to be just like my dog – health, temperament and all – make another family happy?
  • Is my dog in great health and at low risk for genetic diseases?
  • Is my dog fit enough to go through the natural strains of pregnancy, labor and motherhood?
  • Am I prepared to take care of all the puppies if I can’t find them homes?
  • Am I ready to visit the vet several times in the next few months?
  • Am I willing to bring more puppies into the world when millions of dogs are killed each year?
  • Am I comfortable with cleaning up mountains of puppy poop for a couple months?
  • Do I have money I can invest in the upfront costs of breeding?
  • Do I have a suitable place in my home for the puppies to grow up in?
  • Do I have four months of time to dedicate to this?
  • Are my job hours flexible enough to allow me to be home during the day?
  • Can I get all the necessary supplies to care for my dog and her pups?
  • How do I feel about hearing a chorus of little puppy sounds all day?
  • How do I feel about giving countless puppy baths to keep them clean?
  • Am I comfortable with interviewing families and finding the right ones for my puppies?
